Charles Henry Carey was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 27, 1857. Carey graduated with a law degree from Cincinnati College in 1883. He first worked as an associate in the Thayer and Williams law firm in Portland, Oregon (1883-1885) before moving briefly to Michigan. In 1889, Carey returned to Portland and began a long career working in many law firms before eventually being elected to serve as judge on the Portland municipal court.
